All about lab-grown diamonds

Synthetic, lab-grown, cultured, artificial, cultivated, simulated ... there are numerous terms circulating in the industry for the human-created version of diamonds. However, a distinction needs to be made. "Lab-grown", or " grown" for short, is the most commonly used term. It is used synonymously and refers to a genuine diamond grown in a laboratory. A rarely used name that means the same thing is " cultivated" diamond.

Other terms that do not focus on the manufacturing process but on the result are "synthetic" or "artificial" diamond. However, caution is required with these descriptions. They can refer to both the laboratory diamond, which has identical properties to the natural diamond, and stones that only almost match the properties. Widely used diamond imitations are, for example, cubic zirconia or synthetic moissanite. Although they also refract light, their chemical structure is different. The term "simulated" diamond almost always refers to a diamond-like imitation.
